Mercedes’ Dance Recital

Marcia’s School of Dance presented “Stars At Sea” earlier this evening. This year marks Mercedes’ fourth year in dance class and second recital.

mercedes dance 2004 It’s hard to grasp how fast she is growing up. Last Friday was her last day in the first grade, and now she’s completing another year of dance. Scary!

I’m a biased parent, so of course you must believe me when I tell you she did a terrific job tonight. You don’t expect most 6-almost-7 year olds to do things perfectly… and it’s even harder when you have a bunch of other kids that are all doing their own thing too. The thing that was really impressive is that she had mentioned several times that there was one part (a shuffle-ball-change) that was really hard to remember, but during the performance she didn’t skip a beat. And now a few words with our star…

Dad: What was your favorite part of the performance?
Mercedes: I got to dance!
D: Okay, what was your second favorite?
M: Watching Miss Megan. The “Hot Hot Hot” one was one of my favorite ones. I like all of the ones she’s in, actually. And right after the “Hot Hot Hot” one she had to change her entire costume and shoes and be in the next one too!
D: How did you feel when everyone was clapping and waving at the end?
M: The finale? I liked that. The hard part was when [teachers] Miss Marcia and Miss Juliana came up and everyone was yelling in my ear. That was loud.
D: Do you like the flower Mom got for you?
M: Yeah.
D: So, what do you think… do you want to do it again next year?
M: Yeah. Next year I’m doing jazz. (Mom disagrees in the background) (laughs)
D: You did a great job, sweetie.

Actually, her teacher said that unless she can be in tap and jazz at the same time, it’s best to stick with tap for now. We’ll have to see if we can come up with some extra money down the road.

Next year we’ll be watching two girls in the recital. Regan can’t wait!
