I admit that I was quite concerned by headlines implying that Apple has taken a step away from FireWire this past week.

Daring Fireball has a well written analysis of the situation, though. The gist of it is that yes, FireWire is still supported; the cables are supplied as a la carte items on the new iPod Photo and iPod mini.
