{"id":11,"date":"2005-03-12T13:53:56","date_gmt":"2005-03-12T18:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.clank.org\/blog\/?p=11"},"modified":"2005-03-12T13:53:56","modified_gmt":"2005-03-12T18:53:56","slug":"mars-rover-gets-new-lease-on-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clank.org\/blog\/2005\/03\/12\/mars-rover-gets-new-lease-on-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Mars rover gets new lease on life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leonard David of Space.com <a href=\"http:\/\/www.space.com\/missionlaunches\/spirit_dust_050312.html\">reports<\/a> that the Spirit rover has apparently had a chance encounter with a &#8220;dust devil&#8221; on Mars.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe results were dramatic:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>&#8220;The noon solar output from the panels went from a 40 percent loss to just 7 percent,&#8221; said rover science team member, Larry Crumpler, a research curator in volcanology and space sciences at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque.<\/div>\n<div>Images of the panels taken later showed &#8220;beautiful dark panels,&#8221; Crumpler explained. &#8220;And all the wires and edges on the [rover] deck have little dust tails. I think it might have been the Martian squeegee men. Either that or one heck of a buffeting by a dust devil,&#8221; he said.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m starting to wonder if the Mars mission&#8217;s budget and Earth-based controllers&#8217; endurance are going to last as long as these surprising robotic explorers.
